A Year in the Lion city
I'm glad I came here. Singapore is a wonderful and unique place. I also speak like a Singaporean. I've made many wonderful friends, of different age and nationalities. Mostly the academic kind..and soon i'll have a home(flat) here..
I got some positive feedback on my thesis.
I had a startling forecast for skill premium, and my examiner said, maybe Krugman will be interested in your result...adding, if it is robust, ofcourse. I hope it is robust!
If my result is good, maybe I'll continue to work on it and apply for a PhD.
Think I'm going to go into depression, now that my masters in over:( An absolutely enlightening year! Made up for the shit served as "economics honours" at Stephen's.
I've managed to keep afloat for the next couple of months with a flexible research position with private investment fund management firm. Work involves a lot of reading of papers and research reports. Should be a good learning experience. Also gives me time to continue to work on my paper to make it more "robust". Hmm. Also have a lot of books pending and a lot of movies and music to catch up on. Gotta meet up with friends and family soon. Gotta eat hot idlis and vadas at 'Veena stores' in Malleswaram..Yummy! Anjana, I should take you there. The softest idlis and the yummiest vadas in the world!
But first I need to get air tickets. I might just be building castles in thin air here...
Just watched shawshank. Had not seen it..would you believe it! Now i'll get back to polishing my thesis!

Hmm.
Went for a interview, where the boss said, we think you'd be bored with this job. What answer does one give to such a statement.
Anyway, I cleared my Orals!! Time to celebrate.
I must thank Maity for introducing me to Paolo Nutini..Absolutely wonderful! Only 20...I feel so old:)

Chris benoit dead and Shinzo Abe possibly replaced (soon) by a less good looking man.
Today is not a good day for the eye candy club.
Other news: dollar to pound is now at 1.999...Depreciate I say! Just a little bit more..
I'll get back to my power point presentation.
Opmistically I should graduate by friday and be on a flight to blore/delhi on monday.

Sunday afternoon...
I love Sunday Afternoons. Get up late, have a late breakfast, go for Ballet, get a sub(today i had a cookie too), watch Jon Stewart. After which, read some interesting article, like now i'm reading "an essay on the revived bretton woods system", and listening to Weezer's "Islan' in the sun".
On personal lines, Mommy is not online, and Papa is teeing off. Cannot get through to him to wish him happy fathers day...
Bro is probably sleeping and Maity is off to meet nisha in Cal..
I also happen to know that Gupta and Vach are watching Bheja fry
Two of my classmates celebrate their bday today. One is off for dinner and other off to a Karoake bar.
Shwetha is off for mass. Hui Chin, is resting on the 7th day of the week and Shuping is out to dinner methinks...
How about the rest of you ?How do you spend your sunday aternoons?
Now its Travis' "Sing".
Will be heading off to have Mutton Biryani in a while, when Sweety is done with mass.
Nice day, today.

The cost of being polite.
I have a chronic problem. I am extremely polite. Even to the unsavory.
This habit of mine, of replying to anyone and everyone, has won me many a dumbf*&ks friendship and later my wrath.
Yesterday, I got my first crash course on "when and how much to be polite?" by Shwetha Chiramel.
a. When asked by a someone (especially one looking like a thug) "Excuse me, are you from Brunei"- I must reply "No" and move on. And not venture to correct him and answer all his questions matter of factly.
b. To Always turn my head away after the first question, so there is no scope for the next one
c. Never give out my email id or my phone number-especially to the harmless looking one's who seem very lost without my help (I've learned lessons the hard way here)
Anyway, to those wondering where exactly is Brunei, here's a little wiki info
"Brunei, (IPA: [bru·ˈnaʲ]) officially the Negara Brunei Darussalam (Malay: Negara Brunei Darussalam, Jawi: برني دارالسلام ), is a country located on the island of Borneo, in Southeast Asia. Apart from its coastline with the South China Sea it is completely surrounded by the state of Sarawak, East Malaysia. Brunei, the remnant of a very powerful sultanate, regained its independence from the United Kingdom on 1 January 1984."
What kind of pick up line is this anyway. My exact thoughts were "What a dumbf%^k". Shwetha's got the more flattering ones though, like "Are you italian?". Although once I was asked by a Cabbie if I was Persian. He said my "Blue"(they are brown) eyes really made me look Persian. Hmm. The people here are amusing.

Digambar Kamat may be the next Goa Chief Minister.
I'm glad that Rane (maharashtrian surname) , is being replaced by a Konkani.
A Konkani State should ideally be served and run by a Konkani, in my opinion..
Lets just hope he is a nice chap with big ambitions for Goa(like that Parikar chap)
Also, I'm trying to fit in Goa into my Bbay plans. Maybe, I'll skip visiting my first home in Pune and instead visit my native land and visit my cousin there too, and the Kashi Mutt.
If time permits, I'll do Pune, ofcourse conditional on Baby G's availability. Else, Packet its just you and me, if you are willing!
Good Luck Mr Kamat!
Here's a link with his info..

It's the summer hols, here at SMU. Hence, life around is at its dullest, especially since the tribal dance beat- band practice under our study room, has FINALLY stopped.
The profs are touring the world for various seminars and the only people left here at the School of Economics, are us-the wearied and tired Masters students, and people from various companies having their training sessions/seminars.
To make my dull day a little more fun, are some nut cases that loom around the building. I shall endeavour to pay my tribute to them
1. The fat gulti lady at subway-( For sure she does not eat at subway). I visit subway every single day for my lunch and dinner. While the other sweet girl, Grace, has got my order down top to bottom(parmesan oregano 6 inch bread, no cheese-toast, all veggies except pickles, honey mustard sauce and a little chipotle south west, and pepper + Ice tea(small)), this lady always attempts to know my order, and gets it all wrong. "Ah its you, honey oat bread isn't it!". I sweetly decline all her guesses. And finally she adds, "and a coke lite!!".
This is all a little frivolous, but on a daily basis to face her, changes my mood from bored to irritated. Its a change nonetheless.
2. The metrosexual tamilian chap at subway- Clearly in his thirties, but thinks he's 18. Very Very gay. On his bday recently got his hair coloured blonde first(did a photoshoot)..then changed it to beyonce bronze. I was pleasantly(open mouthed) surprised to see his new look, and complimented him, and asked him the question that was begging to be asked.."So how come you decided to go for this look?". He replied, "When you're young la, you got to try all these things no..". Hats off to him. I quite enjoy his company. I get my dinner sub(all of the above with an oven roast chicken breast) made by him everyday.
3. The tamilain security guard with the purple eyes- She looked the typical tamilian, black eyes, curly hair, bindi, glasses, on the healthy side and I used enjoy my hello's and goodbye's and "unga saapda vanga?" "saapda aacha?" with her.Until one day, I stopped dead in my tracks. She had gotten herself new purple(light mind you) contact lenses. "Cool!", I told her, "Matches your shirt!"..what a thing to say..
Well I could go on..but i go to get back to my thesis.
Also picked up the Nokia 6230i phone. Not bad. 230 sing dollars..about Rs. 8000

Robert Zoellick is the US nominee for the 11th president of the World Bank.
A Harvard Law Grad, a Civil War addict, a staunch republican party supporter, and on the good side of both Bush andCheney while not part of their inner circle. The right mix, especially given Bush's weakened influence.
From what I read, this man seems to be the right kind of Chief the World bank is in need of.
Krishna Guha of FT says he is " an efficient decision maker with a commitment to meritocracy-which may appeal to the Bank staff".
After all the ridicule the World Bank has been facing( its turn after the IMF Asian Financial crises fiasco), someone with such broad based support and stong integrity and character is exactly what the World Bank needs.
Here's hoping less scandals and more good work come out of the World Bank.
